Kings Point Open Invite

The first regatta of the 2022 season is under our belt! After waiting for the sea breeze to fill in for most of the morning on Saturday, we were able to get in five races. Shifty light conditions made the day difficult and keeping your head out of the boat extremely important. In the first two races Leo Brandl GS ‘24 and Ali Keenan BC’22 SEAS’23 saw the shifts correctly and had two strong 3rd place finishes. Alex Yuen CC’25 and Alexandra Barron BC’24 rounded out B division on Saturday. On Sunday Leo and Alex were unable to come so Ava Rotondo CC’24 and new team member Alexander Vincenti CC’26 joined, with Ali switching to the back of the boat and Alexander crewing. Light conditions on Sunday again made it tricky to find the front of the fleet and only two more races were sailed. Special thank you to alum Adam DeVita CC’18 for coaching us this weekend! Can’t wait to see what this year holds!

Jack Boehringer Memorial

By Coach Coughlin

Columbia Sailing attended the Jack Boehringer ’52 Memorial Regatta at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY on Cayuga Lake.

Team Captain Elizabeth Keeney (BC ’19) crewed for Lilly Loosbrock (BC ‘21) in the A division. With little practice for the opening event of the regatta the A team competed in difficult light air conditions Saturday and Sunday mornings. Saturday afternoon the wind picked up to 15 knots providing opportunities to plan. Returning Senior Antonia Leggett (CC ‘19) crewed in the B division with Isa de la Torre (CC ‘20); Saturday had Isa skippering and Sunday’s light air provided Antonia the opportunity to skipper in very light and shifty winds.

Coaching from the shore line provided opportunities to examine the competitors and provide A and B division teams insight to compete on the favored side of the course, tactics to follow, and boat speed observations relative to other competitors. Both teams made strong comebacks from difficult starts, as well as downwind gains using their skills to maneuver in on packs of boats arriving at the leeward mark.

The team finished 10th out of 18 teams. Their consistent finish positions are good to see, as consistency awards teams favorable results or top finishes in events. Considering that winning teams typically earn an overall average 5th in all the races, we only have to move up a few consistent average places to move up in the finish scores.

In the coming weekends, support us at the Alumni Regatta on September 16th at our home venue in City Island and at the Luce Regatta at St. Mary’s on September 22, 23!

America Trophy

April 28-29, 2018

IMG_0333.jpeg

CUST ended a strong spring season with the America Trophy regatta at St. Mary’s. On Saturday, a light breeze from the south gave way to a healthy east/northeast 10 knot wind later in the day, allowing sailors from both divisions to complete five sets, leaving four more for Sunday. Against tough competition, Columbia scored seventeenth overall.

Seniors Adam Devita (CC ’18) and Bailey Fryer (SEAS ’18) sailed Division A for their last collegiate regatta with Lily Loosbrock (BC ’21) and Elizabeth Keeney (BC ’19) in Division B.

With the academic year coming to an end, we’d like to congratulate the graduating seniors of CUST for all their hard work on the team and recognize the great year CUST has had, qualifying for both the women’s and co-ed MAISA conference championships both semesters of the year.

Have a great summer and fair winds until next season!

The women of CUST competed in challenging conditions at Old Dominion University this past weekend at the MAISA Conference Championships in sunny Norfolk, Virginia. With light, very shifty wind for both days, Saturday averaged around 4-7 knots, while Sunday racing was postponed until 1 pm, when an 8-15 knot breeze from the northeast allowed both divisions to finish three races.

Against tough competition, Columbia sailed Elizabeth Keeney (BC ’19) and Liliana Loosbrock (BC ’21) in Division A and Isa de la Torre (CC ’20) and Antonia Leggett (CC ’19) in Division B, with Kyelee Fitts (CC ’20) as alternate. With Divisions A and B coming in eleventh and tenth, respectively, Columbia ended the weekend at eleventh overall—only two places shy of qualifying for the National Championships at Sperry College.

Congratulations to the women of CUST for their hard work at the regatta and wish the whole team well at the American Trophy next weekend!

Columbia Sailing headed up to Geneva, NY for the Grant Trophy this weekend. Missing out on the beautiful NYC weather, temperature in Geneva was in the 30s with steady, but shifty breeze coming from the north/northeast. With freezing rain Saturday night and Sunday morning racing was postponed and then cancelled on Sunday.

A Division, skipper Adam DeVita (CC ’18) and Bailey Fryer (SEAS ’18) finished in seventh while B Division Liliana Loosbrock (BC ’21) and Elizabeth Keeney (BC ’19) finished in fourth place. Thank you to alternate Charles Johnson (SEAS ’19) for supporting your teammates this weekend! With eight races in each division, Columbia finished the regatta in sixth place and has qualified for the America Trophy at St. Mary’s College, Maryland in two weeks.

Congratulate our sailors and wish them good luck at upcoming MAISA Women’s and America Trophy qualifiers!

March 31 - April 1:

Light wind caused a few race postponements and abandonments in the morning at the Port Jefferson Yacht Club, but a gust from the southwest reaching 15 knots allowed the sailors to finish the day with six races total. With an abundance of eager sailors at the regatta, Columbia raced two teams in each division, with Lions 1 taking third and sixth and Lions 2 taking fifth and third in Divisions A and B, respectively. Because of the Easter holidays the next day, the teams agreed to finish the regatta on Saturday, with Lions finishing the weekend at third place overall.

Central Spring Open

Saturday, April 8:

The first day of racing saw strong winds of 18-20 knots out of the northwest with gusts up to 28. Racing was postponed in the morning, with the first start occurring at approximately 11:30AM. High winds lead to some difficulty on the water, with multiple capsizes occurring throughout the day and safety boats having to step in to assist. As wind speeds began to intensify around 3pm, racing was postponed until the decision was made to wrap up the first day around 4:30. A total of 5 races were sailed on Saturday, 3 in A divison and 2 in B. Columbia managed to stay upright and sail fast all day despite tough conditions, finishing the day with a 5th, a 7th, and a 9th in A division and a 2nd and 4th in B division.

Sailors:

A: Adam/Elizabeth

B: Nicholas/Antonia

Sunday, April 9

Sunday brought much calmer conditions, with a westerly breeze of 7-8 knots and gusts up to 12 knots. The first start was at 9:45AM, and A division hit the water first to complete their set from the day before. Only one race was completed before the wind died, causing postponement until 11:30PM when the wind picked up out of the southwest 'B' division was able to sail their set. Conditions changed throughout the day, with heavy oscillations and big shifts in pressure on the water requiring constant readjustments of the course. As the day proceeded, the breeze filled in a bit and wind conditions became steadier. In total, three A races and four B races were sailed. Columbia ended the day in 6th overall, with an 8th, 7th, and 6th in A division and two 9ths, and 8th, and a 7th in B division. A big thank you to Monsmouth for hosting the Central Spring Open as well as to Shrewsbury Sailing & Yacht Club and its members for volunteering their time to help ensure things ran smoothly.

Sailors:

A: Calvin/Bailey

B: Isa/Elizabeth

Henry Luce Regatta

Columbia Sailing competed that the Henry Luce regatta held at SUNY Maritime’s venue on the East River, a quick ride from our venue of City Island. Adam DeVita, Elizabeth Keeney, Calvin Tong, Bailey Fryer, and Nicholas Houchois competed in the weekend’s qualifying event. Given a combination of the strong currents, shifty breeze, and competitive teams, conditions throughout the weekend were certainly difficult. However, Columbia getting accustomed to the difficult conditions throughout the weekend put up a good fight, and placed 9th out of 18 boats, just short of qualifying for the upcoming War Regatta. Thank you Coach Conor Cashel for the great advice and encouragement throughout the weekend!

MAISA North Qualifiers

This weekend CUST made the trek up to Geneva, NY to compete at the MAISA North Fall Qualifiers hosted by Hobart and William Smith on Seneca Lake. Coach Conor Cashel, Adam DeVita, Elizabeth Keeney, Nicholas Houchois, Bailey Fryer, Calvin Tong, and Fernand Le Fèvre traveled to charming Geneva for the weekend’s competition.

On Saturday morning A division headed out on the water in light breeze that quickly died. After an hour and a half of floating, the breeze picked up enough to get a set off. Shifty and variable breeze ranging in 4-14 knots from the North presented challenges throughout the day. After six races were completed in both the A and B division, CUST was standing in 7th place out of the fleet of 15 boats. Sunday, sailors waited until 1:30pm for breeze that never came -- though sad they weren’t able to sail, CUST sailors can’t complain about the opportunity to bond and catch some z’s in the sun on the shore of the beautiful Seneca Lake.

Finishing in the top 10, CUST moves on to the Luce Regatta qualifiers in a few weeks!
